This sepia brown with blackish granulation is a watercolor based on a natural pigment of an organic material derived from peat or lignite, known since ancient times.
It is historically extracted between Cologne and Cassel and known since the '700 in Europe as "color Vandyke" for the exceptional use made by the Flemish painter to veil softly and in Belgium as "brown Rubens" that the famous master used to mix with golden ochre to obtain warm and transparent browns.
