Porphyry is volcanic origin rock, it's very hard and difficult to work.

Its name derives from 'Phorphyra' which in ancient Greek means purple, because of its traditionally reddish purplish tone.

Already used by Egyptian and Etruscan sovereigns. The Romans particularly appreciated it for its red color associated with imperial dignity and extracted it from a quarry in Egypt.
